Matthew Jay specialises in using anonymised population-level data to understand how the family justice system works.
He is involved in pioneering data linkages, such as the first linking of UK family court care proceedings data with NHS mental health data, revealing key insights such as that 66% of mothers in care proceedings are known to mental health services.
Matthew is currently leading a Wellcome Trust funded research programme (2025-2029) that uses data from across government to inform family justice policy and improve support for families before they reach crisis point.
